Blah, blah, blah...

Pom-hating ELV-apologist and Aussie RU boss John O'Neill has been at it again, telling the ABC programme Offsiders that either rugby union or rugby league in his country faces possible extinction.

"I think there is a risk that one of the football codes may not survive in the form that it currently enjoys," he said.

"Competition is about survival. Rugby league and rugby union actually are the two games that are very similar. I'm not talking about reunification of the two games, but in this battle for hearts and minds, there is a risk that one of us may slip off the list."

Not talking about reunification? Who's he trying to kid?

TF, I think you need to get back on the paranoia meds.

Is "ELV-apologyst" meant to offend anyone?

Just because I'm paranoid it doesn't mean you're not all out to get me!

Seriously though, are you suggesting that someone as politically canny as O'Neil doesn't have an agenda?

I believe "cunning as a shithouse rat" is an apt phrase for JO'n, and I say that affectionately!

I think he's being pretty open actually - one of the rugby codes is gonna wither away, and he wants it to be League. Nothing about joining forces, would never work.

Well, I think Australia would benefit more than any other country in the world from it.

Why not joining both codes?

SYC,

Merging both codes might have some merit, but their administrators are even worse than the Union ones...

"Why not joining both codes?"

Because, in my humble opinion, it would lead to an unacceptable dumbing down of rugby union - a path we're already way too far down for my liking...

SYC - Australian Rugby Union sucking up all the talent that is wasted in League and GayFL is a long held dream of all Wallabies fans (and nightmare for for the likes of Sportsfreak!).

However, Union comes 3rd behind these other two ball-in-hand codes in terms of grass roots support, so they're not quaking in their boots about a take-over from us.

What keeps union alive financially in Australia is the fact that it's truly international, unlike the other two wastes of time.

Unlike TF's delusion, Aussie rugby supporters don't wan't to see the game become league. It's why we follow union and not league, even as a minority.

Union does however need to evolve, like it always has (should go back to the 9, being bound on the scrum and 4 point tries TF?) so that the pressures of the professional era don't overcome the game with low-risk bore-athons like the last RWC.

The reason you hear JO'n talking this line more often is that unlike in the UK, there's more competition in Australia for a far smaller ball-in-hand dollar-pie. JO'n is just trying to keep the game alive and healthy.

Matt - I honestly don't believe that true Union supporters in Australia want to see a merger with League - I just don't have much trust or faith in your administrators (or ours for that matter).

As for evolution - no problem with that at all - but you can't honestly, hand on heart, call the ELVs merely evolutionary, can you?

Oh TF, the heartfelt emotion in your words! Of a man who can see the world around him changing and not being able to do anything about it!! ;)

But seriously, hand on heart - having watched the S14 ELVs for 14 weeks, and now going back in time over the last 2 weekends, I can honestly say that the S14 rule changes have done as intended; give the game more continuity and encourage attacking play over no-risk rugby.

It's actually quite strange to now see the outcome of a game dictated (via penalty goals) by a refs dodgy interpretation at a breakdown.

Scrums are still important, as are rolling mauls. But this leads me to a point that I find myself agreeing, yes agreeing, with you on. I really don't understand why they are bringing in the pulling down of the maul, for so many reasons.

I thought they had deliberately left this out of the S14 because it was blatantly fucking stupid, but obviously not. Perhaps that will be the sacrificial lamb for the rest of them to go through?
