Today's announcement from the RFU that it has agreed to extend Eddie Jones' contract as England head
coach until 2021 makes perfect sense.
Jones had previously
maintained he would step down after the 2019 World Cup, but the contract
extension will help provide an element of continuity into the next World Cup cycle, rather
than require the RFU to adopt the “rip it up and start again” approach needed after the last two tournaments
in 2011 and 2015.
And the fact that the RFU has said that it intends to appoint Eddie's successor in 2020 to work alongside the Australian for a year is as innovative as it is surprising. What price on that man being Exeter's Rob Baxter?
